Norfolk & Suffolk Broads

The Broads National Park starts only a short way down river from Duke’s Lodge. Home to a network of historic, shallow lakes and waterways starts, the Broads are synonymous with boating and time on the water. The Broads National Park is rich with wildlife and supports a wealth of rare species of flora and fauna.

Nearby Beccles is known as ‘The Gateway to the Broads’ and at Outney Meadow in Bungay, you can hire canoes to start your own exploration of the River Waveney and the Broads National Park.

Food & Drink

From coffee-roasters and vineyards to more traditional and award-winning on-farm cheese producers and breweries, you’ll find a whole host of delicious temptations practically on your Duke’s Lodge doorstep.

Flint Vineyard is in walking distance, along farm paths.  The famous St Peter’s Brewery is a reasonable ramble from the nearby village of Earsham. But no visit to the historic market town of Bungay is complete without a visit to Fen Farm Dairy – home of the brie-style Baron Bigod – and the amazing Earsham Street Deli, not to mention a great array of tempting shops and cafes all championing local food and drink…

Historic Bungay

A hugely historic town with castle ruins, fine churches and the site of an old port ‘Staithe’, Bungay is a real local treasure – a brilliant market town full of character with some lovely riverside walks .

At it’s core is the domed Georgian Butter Cross –  home to weekly and monthly markets.

Beautiful Beecles

With its quayside bobbing with small pleasure craft and its gorgeously green riverside and marshland trails, Beccles is a popular, historic market town destination and a great place for independent shops too.

Aviation Collections & WWII Airfields

Suffolk and Norfolk was England’s airbase in WWII and has a plethora of USAAF airfields and connections.

Find out all your need to know and more at the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton. It’s not just down the road from Duke’s Lodge – it’s free too, and gets 5 stars on Trip Advisor!

With indoor and outdoor exhibits across all sorts of aviation history (including an early microlight flown in a James Bond film!), plus themed events, there really is something for everyone.

Earsham Park Farm Walks

We love it when our guests  don the wellies from the boot room and explore the amazing countryside and wildlife at Earsham Park Farm through our detailed footpath and field margin walks.

Great for working up an appetite, getting a real breath of fresh Norfolk air and tail-waggingly good for a dog walk (on a lead please!)  at any time of year.

If boating is more your thing, why not hire a rowing boat or canoe for a day out on the water from Bungay’s Outney Meadow?

Prefer to put your feet up and enjoy a pint? Follow the Angles Way Path from Beccles to the riverside ale house which really knows its beers at  Geldeston Locks – and take the Big Dog Ferry back.
